Archibald Campbell, also known as Lord Archibald Campbell, was a Scottish antiquary whose publications preserved material concerning Highland clan history and tradition. The Children of the Mist was issued in Edinburgh in 1890 under the fuller title The Children of the Mist: Or, The Scottish Clansmen in Peace and War. This fifty-five-page volume presents notes collected by Campbell, and its extended title states the documentary focus on clansmen in peaceful and martial settings. He also produced Waifs and Strays of Celtic Tradition and wrote on objects associated with Culloden, showing a sustained interest in cultural memory as well as military history. The Children of the Mist belongs to nineteenth-century antiquarian practice, where oral accounts, clan identities, visual material, and historical commentary were assembled for preservation. Readers should therefore approach it as both a record of Highland traditions and evidence of how Campbell's period represented them. His method sought to retain clan knowledge while arranging it for readers beyond the communities in which those traditions developed.
