Archibald Lampman shaped Canadian landscape poetry through exact observation, reflective solitude, and an increasing concern with industrial modernity. A member of the Confederation Poets, he spent most of his working life as a postal clerk in Ottawa and explored the nearby rivers, woods, and hills whenever work allowed. Among the Millet and Other Poems, issued in Ottawa in 1888, was his first collection. Its seasonal scenes and rural subjects join natural detail to shifts in mood, while later poems extend that attention toward social and philosophical questions. Alcyone was being prepared when Lampman died in 1899; a small number of specimen copies appeared, and Duncan Campbell Scott later folded its contents into a memorial collection. The issued volume is titled simply Alcyone. Lampman’s range exceeds the quiet nature lyric for which he is best known: poems such as The City of the End of Things confront mechanization and social unease. Across both collections, landscape becomes a way of thinking about consciousness, labor, time, and change.
