Helen Gray Cone combined poetry, teaching, and literary scholarship in a career closely connected with higher education. Soldiers of the Light gathers poems on historical memory, public duty, art, and private reflection. The collection includes pieces connected with the American Civil War, among them work on Gettysburg and Abraham Lincoln, alongside poems drawn from streets, landscapes, and literary subjects. Richard G. Badger issued the volume through the Gorham Press in the early twentieth century. Cone taught at the Normal College of the City of New York, later Hunter College, and became the institution's first woman professor. She led its English department and published criticism as well as poetry. Soldiers of the Light shows the range behind that academic career: formal verse, dramatic address, commemoration, and close observation appear within the same book. Cone's poems often begin with a particular person or scene, then widen toward questions about courage, loss, artistic inheritance, or collective remembrance.
