Avery Cockburn is the romance byline of Jeri Smith-Ready, who had already published the Shade trilogy and the WVMP Radio books in fantasy and young adult fiction. The Glasgow Lads began in 2015 around the Woodstoun Warriors, an invented LGBT football club in Glasgow, with the independence referendum and the city's old sectarian divide running through the plots. Play On is the novella for Duncan and Brodie. Playing for Keeps, the first full novel, belongs to Fergus and John, and Playing to Win to Colin and Andrew. Throwing Stones moves the cast off grass and onto ice as a Glasgow Lads on Ice story about Luca and Oliver, built around curling. Cockburn writes from the United States and freely calls herself a couch potato, saying the sport in the books is research and redrafting rather than anything she plays.
