All for the Game began as a self-published trilogy about an invented sport, exy, played at a small American university by a team assembled almost entirely from people with criminal records and worse histories behind them.Neil Josten is running from his father under a false name, and the books are considerably darker than the sports premise prepares anyone for. Sakavic put them out quietly in 2013 and they found their readership slowly and then all at once, almost entirely through people pressing them on each other rather than through any publisher. The prose is rough in stretches, and virtually nobody who reaches the end of the third book seems to mind.
