Aya de Leon

Aya de Leon brings a novelist's craft, a poet's ear, and an activist's focus to questions of racial justice, gender, labor, and institutional power. Queen of Urban Prophecy follows Deza, a twenty-year-old Chicago rapper whose politically resonant bonus track unexpectedly propels her into national attention. Her label places her on an all-female tour, but success brings pressure from executives, conflict within the touring team, and difficult choices about using celebrity for public advocacy. De Leon draws on her experience as a spoken-word and hip-hop theater artist, giving the book a grounded sense of performance, audience, and music-industry negotiation. She has also taught creative writing and directed Poetry for the People at the University of California, Berkeley. The novel stands outside her established crime-fiction sequence, yet it shares the social focus and energetic plotting found across her work.
