Aylward Edward Dingle (1874–1947) was an English-born sailor who turned decades of hard experience into fiction. Born in Oxford, he spent roughly twenty-two years at sea and was shipwrecked five times, including twelve weeks marooned on the subantarctic island of St. Paul. He sold his first story to Adventure magazine in 1913 and went on to write sea and adventure yarns for the pulps under his own name and the pen name Sinbad, alongside an autobiography, A Modern Sinbad.
