Benjamin Lorr
The Secret Life of Groceries follows the American supermarket backwards: a trucking school, a Thai fishing boat where the labour is effectively forced, a slotting-fee negotiation, and the founder of Trader Joe's. Lorr worked a shift stocking shelves to see it from inside. His earlier book, Hell-Bent, did the same for competitive Bikram yoga and its founder, and was published before the criminal allegations against him became widely known. The method in both is immersion long enough that people forget he is writing it down.
