Barry Miles

Barry Miles participated in the London underground of the 1960s and later documented that world as a British writer and cultural historian. Zappa: A Biography traces Frank Zappa's development as a composer, guitarist, bandleader, filmmaker, and independent-minded public figure. Grove Press issued the biography after Miles had already written extensively about Beat literature, popular music, and counterculture. His bibliography includes studies of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, and the Beat Hotel, as well as Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now. That background lets Miles place Zappa within overlapping worlds of experimental composition, rock performance, satire, and disputes over artistic control. The book balances a chronological career account with attention to recordings, touring groups, business decisions, and Zappa's deliberately confrontational public persona.
