Bp. Bury, Herbert was an Anglican bishop and traveller whose ministry took him through northern Europe, Russia, and Siberia during the early twentieth century. Serving as Bishop for Northern and Central Europe, he visited scattered Anglican communities while observing Russian religious practice, transport, commerce, village life, and social conditions. Russian Life To-day appeared through A. R. Mowbray in 1915 and presents those experiences as personal impressions rather than a systematic political history. Its chapters move from the country’s vast spaces and urban customs to the Orthodox clergy, peasantry, government, minority communities, and British workers beyond the Urals. Bury writes from the standpoint of an English churchman but repeatedly stresses encounters that challenged inherited British assumptions about Russia. Earlier service as Bishop of Honduras and authorship of A Bishop among Bananas had already joined travel with episcopal memoir. Russian Life To-day records another geographically demanding ministry while preserving a contemporary view of an empire undergoing rapid social change.
