H. N. Brailsford worked as a British journalist, political writer, and campaigner whose books addressed international relations, socialism, nationalism, and democratic reform. The covenant of peace appeared in 1919 as an essay on the League of Nations, with an introduction by Herbert Croly, and considered how collective institutions might prevent another European war. The Russian workers’ republic followed in 1921 after Brailsford spent two months travelling through Soviet Russia. It surveys factories, village administration, education, the Communist Party, the army, and the competing revolutionary traditions he encountered. Brailsford had earlier reported on the Balkans and criticized the diplomatic and economic rivalries behind the First World War. He also supported women’s suffrage and wrote for newspapers and political journals over a long career. The covenant of peace and The Russian workers’ republic mark connected stages in his thinking: first an international peace settlement, then close observation of a revolutionary state reorganizing society under severe pressure. Both combine travel, political argument, and institutional analysis.
