Author: Brenda Cooper
Brenda Cooper combines speculative fiction with professional experience in technology, city management, and long-range planning. The Silver Ship and the Sea opens her three-volume Fremont’s Children sequence, following six genetically altered young people on the distant colony of Fremont after their community rejects them. Tor issued the book during 2007; it received the Endeavour Award for distinguished science fiction or fantasy by a Pacific Northwest writer. Cooper continued the characters’ story through Reading the Wind and Wings of Creation. The Creative Fire instead begins her separate Ruby’s Song sequence. She also collaborated with Larry Niven on Building Harlequin’s Moon and later wrote the Wilders and Glittering Edge books. Across these projects, technological change matters most when it alters belonging, civic choices, or obligations between generations. The Silver Ship and the Sea establishes that emphasis through young colonists deciding whether difference makes them dangerous, valuable, or responsible for building another kind of society.
