Carl W Ackerman reported internationally as an American correspondent, biographer, and journalism educator across Europe, Mexico, and Russia. Germany is the shortened catalogue form of Germany, the Next Republic?, his 1917 account of German politics and public life during the 1914-1918 conflict. Ackerman had reported from Germany for United Press and drew on encounters with officials, soldiers, and civilians while examining the pressures surrounding the imperial government. His other books included Mexico’s Dilemma, Trailing the Bolsheviki, and a substantial biography of Kodak founder George Eastman. In 1931 he became dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, a position he held for more than two decades. His career joined daily reporting, institutional leadership, and book-length interpretation of international affairs. Germany belongs to his early period as a correspondent, when access to wartime societies gave him material for explaining political change to American readers.
