Charles Hardwick served as an English clergyman, historian, and editor whose scholarship concentrated on religious history and early English texts. A Poem On The Times Of Edward II presents a medieval political poem from a manuscript held by St Peter’s College, Cambridge. Hardwick edited the text for the Percy Society, which published it in London in 1849 as part of its series on early English poetry and popular literature. On Some Ancient Battle extends the catalogue’s reference to his antiquarian writing on Lancashire battlefields, where historical, legendary, and aesthetic associations meet. His other editorial work included an Anglo-Saxon account of Saint George and contributions to the catalogue of manuscripts at Cambridge University Library. Hardwick also wrote on the history of the Articles of Religion and served as a preacher and academic.
