Christopher Partridge

Christopher Partridge is a professor at Lancaster University whose research brings religious studies into conversation with popular music, counterculture, drug cultures, and Western occult thought. He co-edits the Studies in Religion and Popular Music series for Bloomsbury and Studies in Popular Music for Equinox, roles that reflect his interest in how belief travels through everyday cultural forms. Dub In Babylon studies the development of dub reggae in Jamaica and its influence in Britain from King Tubby through post-punk. The book first establishes dub's Jamaican musical and cultural background, then follows its political and aesthetic importance for African Caribbean and white British communities in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Equinox released the monograph in 2010. His bibliography also includes The Re-Enchantment of the West, The Lyre of Orpheus, High Culture, and Cannabis, Sacred and Profane. Together, these works examine the traffic between religion, altered states, recorded sound, and popular culture rather than treating those areas as separate academic subjects.
