Ian Carr was a British trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and jazz writer whose work moved between performance and criticism. Born in 1933, he played with Don Rendell in the Rendell-Carr Quintet before forming the jazz-rock group Nucleus in 1969. Nucleus won the European Broadcasting Union prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival and performed at Newport in 1970. Carr published Miles Davis as a critical biography in 1982 and later expanded it. He also wrote a study of pianist Keith Jarrett and taught jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Music Outside, issued in 1973, documented the players and politics of contemporary British jazz. Carr died in 2009.
