Henry Charles Lahee was a music writer, administrator, and chronicler whose reference works traced performers and institutions across European and American musical history. Famous Violinists of To-day and Yesterday moves chronologically through schools of violin playing, major virtuosi, women performers, quartets, and figures including Paganini, Ole Bull, Joseph Joachim, and Eugène Ysaÿe. L. C. Page published the illustrated volume near the end of the nineteenth century. Century of Choral Singing in New England appeared in the New England Magazine in 1902 and surveyed a regional tradition of organized vocal performance. Lahee had practical knowledge of Boston's musical institutions, serving as secretary of the New England Conservatory from 1891 to 1899 before establishing a music agency. His writing reflects the reference habits of its period, combining biographical sketches, chronological tables, institutional memory, and judgments about performance. The result preserves how an early twentieth-century observer understood musical reputation, education, and concert culture.
