Colin Quinn
1959
Colin Quinn developed a comic voice as a writer, performer, and social commentator whose stage and television work often examines regional identity, politics, and the habits Americans share while arguing about their differences. Overstated expands that approach into a state-by-state comic survey under the full subtitle A Coast-to-Coast Roast of the 50 States. The 2020 edition came from St. Martin’s Press after Quinn had developed related material through stand-up and his Red State Blue State show. Drawing on decades of touring, he assigns each state a personality, mocks its familiar traits, and then treats the country as an unruly extended family that still recognizes itself. The humor moves between local stereotypes, historical anecdotes, and observations about national division. Overstated was named an NPR Best Book of the Year, while its conversational structure preserves the cadence of Quinn’s live performance. The result connects his career as a touring comic with his longer interest in how Americans describe their neighbors and themselves.
