Perfect Peace is about a woman in rural Arkansas who wanted a daughter and raised her eighth son as a girl until he was eight. Don't Cry for Me is a sequence of letters from a dying father in Chicago to the gay son he drove away, written in the voice of a man who has run out of time to learn a different language. He has said the book came out of his own father's silence.
