David Betancourt has reported on comic-book culture and its links to race, business and art. His work for The Washington Post's Comic Riffs blog included interviews, screen criticism and coverage of representation in comics, and he has twice been nominated for an Eisner Award. For The Avengers Assembled, Betancourt returned to Marvel's original 1960s stories and read the first 100 issues of The Avengers. DK published the 304-page book in 2023. It traces the team's formation and changing membership while profiling characters including Iron Man, Captain America, Wasp, Thor, Black Widow and Black Panther. The project presents the fictional team as the subject of a researched collective biography rather than a single adventure.
