David Macinnis Gill is an American writer and educator known for science fiction and other speculative stories for teen readers. Rising Sun is a stand-alone prequel novella in his Black Hole Sun sequence, returning to the Mars setting and the earlier life of Jacob Stringfellow, known as Durango. Greenwillow Books published the novella as part of a series that includes Black Hole Sun, Invisible Sun, and Shadow on the Sun. Gill’s debut novel, Soul Enchilada, preceded those books and helped establish his energetic approach to genre fiction. He has taught both secondary and university students, earned a doctorate in education, and served as president of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents. His scholarly work has addressed literature for adolescents and reading choice. Rising Sun joins these interests by combining an accessible teenage viewpoint with a fully imagined science-fiction setting, while adding background to a character whose later adventures anchor the wider sequence.
