Dawn Kurtagich
Dawn Kurtagich writes horror and dark fantasy for teen readers, drawing on fragmented records, shifting viewpoints, and landscapes that seem to retain memory. Teeth in the Mist links three young women across different periods in Wales: Zoey in the present, Roan in the nineteenth century, and Hermione in the sixteenth. All three are connected to the remote Mill House and the mountain surrounding it. The novel appeared from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 2019; its 464-page structure uses letters, transcripts, and other documents alongside conventional narration. Kurtagich grew up in Africa and later settled in Wales, a biographical movement reflected in her recurring interest in place, isolation, and unfamiliar terrain. The novel does not treat its timelines as decorative puzzles. Each perspective changes what the others can mean, gradually exposing inherited patterns of secrecy and resistance. Teeth in the Mist therefore joins historical atmosphere to formal experimentation, asking how a story changes when its evidence survives in pieces rather than as one reliable account.
