Dean Nicholson
Dean Nicholson turned an open-ended bicycle journey into a travel memoir after an unexpected companion redirected its course. Nala’s World, written with Garry Jenkins, recounts Nicholson’s departure from Dunbar, Scotland, in September 2018 and his encounter with a stray kitten in Bosnia. He named her Nala, adapted his bicycle so she could travel safely and continued across countries with her. Grand Central Publishing issued the American edition in 2020. Before the journey, Nicholson had worked in manual trades, and this was his first book. Jenkins’s credited role matters to its authorship: the memoir shapes Nicholson’s experiences into a continuous account of travel, animal companionship and the connections the pair made along the route.
