Author: Dervla Murphy
Dervla Murphy was an Irish travel writer whose journeys combined physical endurance with close attention to politics, everyday life, and the consequences of outside power. After caring for her mother for many years, she cycled from Ireland to India, an expedition recounted in Full Tilt, and then continued traveling through Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. One Foot in Laos grew from a 1997 trip across a country only recently reopened to many Western visitors. A 1999 John Murray edition introduced the book, followed by an American edition from Overlook Press in 2001. Murphy records difficult travel alongside conversations with residents, using those encounters to consider Laos’s recent history, social conditions, and vulnerability to rapid modernization. The book belongs to a later phase of her career in which journeys increasingly carried explicit historical and political inquiry. Across more than five decades, she preferred slow, ground-level travel and resisted treating destinations as scenery, allowing hospitality, argument, inconvenience, and chance meetings to determine the shape of her narratives.
