In the Language of Love traces the life of Joanna, a collage artist, through one hundred short chapters. Each chapter takes its heading from a word in Kent and Rosanoff's early twentieth-century word-association test, allowing memory and association to replace a conventional chronological plan. The book was Schoemperlen's first novel after several story collections and appeared in the mid-1990s. Reviewers noted how its imposed vocabulary accommodates childhood, family, friendship, desire, disappointment, and artistic work without making Joanna's life feel mechanically arranged. Schoemperlen later received Canada's Governor General's Literary Award for Forms of Devotion, another book that combines fiction with visual and structural play. In the Language of Love already displays that characteristic method: a strict external frame becomes a flexible means of recording how a woman's private history gathers meaning through recurring words, images, and emotional connections.
