Dick Porter

Dick Porter is a British music writer whose books trace the histories, recordings, and cultural settings of influential rock groups. Journey to the Centre of the Cramps expands his earlier biography of the Cramps into a fuller chronological study of the band founded by Lux Interior and Poison Ivy. Omnibus Press describes the work as substantially rewritten and enlarged, drawing on first-hand interview material, rare photographs, and accounts from former members and other figures around the group. Porter follows the Cramps from their emergence in the late 1970s New York scene through the end of the band after Interior's death, while also considering their musical influences and role in shaping psychobilly. His other subjects have included the Ramones, the White Stripes, Blondie, and the New York Dolls, sometimes in collaboration with Kris Needs. Journey to the Centre of the Cramps therefore reflects Porter's broader interest in how distinctive bands develop identities through performance, records, and scene connections over time. The 2025 Omnibus edition extends a book first published in 2015.
