The Art of the Deal was published in 1987 under Trump's name and written by Tony Schwartz, who shadowed him for eighteen months and has since said publicly that he regrets it, that Trump contributed almost none of the text, and that he would call the book a work of fiction if he were writing it now. It sets out an approach to negotiation built on leverage, publicity and exaggeration, which the book itself calls truthful hyperbole. Trump inherited and expanded a New York property business, took casino and hotel companies through six corporate bankruptcies, became a television personality, and has served as president of the United States twice.
