Donna Hill has published more than seventy books since her career began in 1987. Her first novel, Rooms of the Heart, came from Odyssey Books in 1990, at a point when almost no American publisher carried romance with Black leads. Born in Brooklyn, she holds an MFA in creative writing from Goddard College, works as an assistant professor of English, and teaches writing at the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center. Intimate Betrayal, Masquerade and A Private Affair were all adapted for television, and in 2009 she set up InnerVision Publishing with the author Pittershawn Palmer to push multicultural fiction into the digital market. She has taken the RT Career Achievement Award. What Mother Never Told Me follows Parris McKay, raised in the Delta by her grandmother, who learns that the mother she believed dead is alive. When I'm With You is the eighth Lawsons of Louisiana novel. I Am Ayah: The Way Home, from Sideways Books in 2023, brings Alessandra Fleming back to Sag Harbor and its long-standing African American summer community, with a light thread of magical realism running through the family history.
