Dorothy Rowe worked as a clinical psychologist and writer, grounding her books about distress in psychological research and clinical practice. After completing a doctorate in 1971, she established and led the Lincolnshire Department of Clinical Psychology from 1972 to 1986. Her best-known book, Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison, presents a meaning-centred approach for general readers and won the Mind Book of the Year Award in 1984. After leaving the National Health Service, Rowe built a self-employed career through books, journalism, broadcasting and public speaking. She later returned to Australia and died in 2019. Her accessible psychological writing retained the perspective gained through years of clinical work and leadership.
