Eimear McBride is an Irish novelist known for formally adventurous fiction and intensely voiced accounts of memory, desire, and selfhood. Strange Hotel, her third novel, follows an unnamed middle-aged woman through hotel rooms in cities including Avignon, Oslo, Auckland, and Austin. Rather than building a conventional travel narrative, McBride confines much of the action to temporary interiors where the traveller confronts past relationships, loss, and the possibility of returning home. Picador presents the book as a novel of exile and emotional force, while contemporary criticism notes its controlled, meditative approach compared with the fractured language of A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing and The Lesser Bohemians. Those earlier novels brought McBride major recognition, including the Baileys Women’s Prize and the Goldsmiths Prize for her debut. Published in 2020 by Faber & Faber in Britain and Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the United States, Strange Hotel extends her continuing interest in voice through a quieter, deliberately unsettled form.
