Elizabeth Ames structures fiction around friendship, consequence, and the long afterlife of formative choices. A graduate of the University of Michigan’s MFA program, she received a Hopwood Award, and her short fiction has appeared in Ninth Letter and Third Coast. The Other’s Gold is her debut novel, first published by Viking in 2019. It follows Lainey, Ji Sun, Alice, and Margaret from their first year at Quincy-Hawthorn College into careers, relationships, and parenthood. Ames divides the book into four sections, each organized around a consequential mistake made by one member of the group. That design turns a campus friendship story into a longer study of loyalty, accountability, memory, and forgiveness. The work is literary fiction centered on women’s lives, and Pushkin Press published a later British edition. The Other’s Gold draws on Ames’s familiarity with university communities but focuses on the evolving bonds among its four protagonists. Its ensemble structure and decade-spanning chronology distinguish it from a conventional single-character campus novel.
