It follows rescue specialist Doctor Jens as she investigates an ancient generation ship entangled with a modern vessel, an unknown illness among the crew, and a shipmind whose memory has been damaged. The Folded Sky later extended the sequence. In Machine, Bear brings medicine and technology into a story about how people respond when the systems meant to protect a community begin to fail.
