Emilie Burack
Emilie Burack, who publishes under the fuller name Emilie Christie Burack, writes historically grounded adventures for children. The Runaway’s Gold is her debut novel, issued by Amulet Books in 2015 after selection by the Junior Library Guild. Set partly in the Shetland Islands and partly in New York in the 1800s, the story follows Christian Robertson after a stolen bag of coins forces him away from home. Burack grounds the adventure in the life of a crofter’s family and in the experience of migration, joining a personal effort to clear Christian’s name with a wider journey across the Atlantic. Her professional background includes an MFA in writing for children and young people from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has also served schools as a visiting author and worked with literacy organizations in New Hampshire, roles that place the novel within a sustained commitment to children’s books and reading communities.
