Emily Urquhart is a Canadian writer, folklorist, and educator whose nonfiction connects intimate family experience with cultural research. Beyond the Pale begins with the birth of her daughter Sadie, whose diagnosis of albinism sends Urquhart into a wider investigation of genetics, folklore, disability, and inherited stories. HarperCollins issued Beyond the Pale in 2015, describing it as part memoir, part cultural critique, and part genetic travelogue. Urquhart’s training supports that blend: she holds a doctorate in folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland and undergraduate degrees in journalism and art history. Her essays and reporting have appeared in Canadian magazines, and her work has received a National Magazine Award. Beyond the Pale was recognized by major Canadian nonfiction prizes and explores beliefs about albinism across communities in North America and Africa while remaining grounded in parenting. Urquhart later wrote The Age of Creativity and Ordinary Wonder Tales, continuing her interest in how art, memory, family lore, and scholarly inquiry illuminate one another.
