Erin Lee Carr
Erin Lee Carr directs documentaries and writes about media, institutions, and complicated public cases. All That You Leave Behind is her 2019 memoir about her relationship with her father, New York Times journalist David Carr, and the task of continuing after his sudden death. Ballantine published the book, which draws on 1,936 pieces of their digital correspondence as well as Erin’s memories of family life, work, dependency, and recovery. The result is both a daughter’s portrait and an account of learning a demanding creative profession under an unusually forceful mentor. Carr has directed documentary projects including At the Heart of Gold, I Love You, Now Die, and an episode of Dirty Money. All That You Leave Behind connects that screen career to prose by treating archived messages as evidence, conversation, and inheritance, while refusing to simplify either the affection or difficulty within the bond she describes.
