Wright was embedded with the First Reconnaissance Battalion of the marines for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, riding in a lead Humvee with the men whose talk fills Generation Kill, which began as a Rolling Stone series. HBO filmed it in 2008 and several of the marines worked on the production or played versions of themselves. Before that he had written for Hustler, which he said was useful training in not being easily shocked. Nothing in the book is softened, including what the marines say about the people among whom they are fighting. He died in 2024.
