Evangeline Walton
Evangeline Walton built a fantasy career best known for reimagining the Welsh Mabinogion in a celebrated four-volume sequence. She Walks in Darkness reveals a different facet of her work: a gothic tale set around a Tuscan villa, an archaeological excavation, and secrets embedded in an old household. Tachyon Publications issued the previously unpublished novel posthumously in 2013, while Kirkus described it as an atmospheric story shaped by Walton's interest in myth and history. The book follows a honeymooning couple whose visit draws them toward catacombs and a mystery connected to the villa's past. Walton's careful use of landscape and inherited stories makes the setting more than decoration; place becomes the route through which buried knowledge returns. Her career received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, recognition of a body of work that helped bring mythic women and older narrative traditions into modern fantasy. This late publication therefore expands, rather than merely repeats, the achievement for which she is remembered.
