Flea

1962

Flea is the bass player in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which he co-founded at school in Los Angeles in 1983 with three friends, two of whom are dead. Acid for the Children stops before the band starts: it is about a Melbourne childhood, moving to America, a violent stepfather, jazz trumpet lessons, and the drugs he was taking heavily by thirteen. He plays trumpet on records, has acted since the eighties, and founded a music school in Los Angeles that teaches children for free or close to it. The prose is far better than a rock memoir has any obligation to be.
