Florence Finch Kelly worked across American journalism, editing, criticism, and fiction, joining newspaper work with books about the West. Born in Illinois in 1858, she graduated from the University of Kansas in 1881 and later wrote for publications including the Boston Globe. A reference biography records that she contributed to the New York Times Book Review for roughly three decades, giving her a sustained role in literary journalism. Emerson’s Wife and Other Western Stories, issued by A. C. McClurg in 1911, gathers short fiction set in western communities and landscapes. Project Gutenberg’s record identifies the volume as a collection and lists stories ranging from its title piece to tales involving ranches, deserts, mining camps, and frontier towns. The book therefore reflects a second strand of Kelly’s work: narrative portrayals of western life alongside the reviewing and reporting that occupied much of her professional career.
