Gabriele D'Annunzio was an Italian poet, novelist, dramatist, and public figure whose prose often joined physical sensation with elaborate memory. Notturno grew from an unusual constraint. After an eye injury in 1916 left him confined to bed, he composed short passages on narrow strips of paper that could be written without normal sight. The resulting book-length prose poem moves through wartime recollection, childhood, grief, his mother, and the altered consciousness of enforced darkness. Yale University Press published the first complete English translation in 2012 as part of the Margellos World Republic of Letters series. Stephen Sartarelli translated the text, and Virginia Jewiss contributed the preface. Rather than following a conventional narrative line, Notturno accumulates images and fragments, allowing sounds, tactile impressions, and remembered faces to replace ordinary vision. The form makes D'Annunzio's method inseparable from the work's subject: a writer known for visual richness reconstructs experience through language while sight itself is unavailable.
