George Madden Martin was the literary name used by Kentucky writer Georgia May Madden Martin, whose fiction, short stories, and plays often examined childhood and social responsibility. Children in the Mist, pp.1-283 represents a 1920 collection focused on Black life in the American South, while March On, published in 1921, considers women’s public responsibilities in the aftermath of the First World War. Martin had begun publishing magazine stories in the 1890s and became especially known for Emmy Lou: Her Book and Heart, which follows a schoolgirl’s changing understanding of education. Her public commitments grew alongside her writing. She served on the board of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation and later chaired the Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching. Her sister Eva Anne Madden also wrote, and Martin belonged to Louisville’s Authors Club, placing her within an active regional literary circle. Across these roles, Martin connected realistic fiction with questions of schooling, racial injustice, civic participation, and the emerging independence of women in the early twentieth century.
