About this book

The Angel of the Tenement is by George Madden Martin. The contents list chapters called The Advent of the Angel, Introduces the Little Major, The Angel Becomes a Fairy, The Angel Rescues Mr. Tomlin and Tells of the Tenement's Christmas. Miss Bonkowski says that Angel is three years old, a great, big girl, the child wants her breakfast and her milk, and Mrs. O'Malligan pronounces it another case of desartion.

A crowd grows in numbers as dusk falls and the cars are blocked, while a giant in height and breadth, grasping an iron support twisted from a bench, is using it to pry up the bricks from the sidewalk. A woman sets the tired and sleepy child down on her shawl in the adjoining room and hurries down to find Mrs. O'Malligan and beg a scrap of paper, but Mrs. O'Malligan's door is locked.
