Author: Edward Anwyl

Edward Anwyl was a Welsh scholar of Celtic languages, religion, and comparative philology whose teaching helped establish Welsh studies within modern university life. Born in 1866, he studied at Oxford and later became principal of the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth. Celtic Religion in Pre-Christian Times appeared in 1906 within the Religions Ancient and Modern series. The concise study surveys early evidence for Celtic belief, sacred places, divine figures, ritual practice, ideas of life after death, and the effects of Roman contact and Christian conversion. Anwyl worked across archaeology, classical testimony, language, and medieval Irish and Welsh literature, while acknowledging that the evidence was fragmentary and often preserved through later texts. He also wrote on Welsh grammar and served educational and cultural institutions in Wales, receiving a knighthood in 1911. Although later scholarship has revised many early comparative theories, the book remains representative of a formative period in the academic study of Celtic religion.
