The text says civilization sprang up in the alluvial valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates, the Indus and the Ganges, and on the soil watered by the great rivers of China, the Hoang-Ho and the Yang-tse-Kiang. The text describes the attempt of John Brown, a brave old man of the Puritan type, to stir up an insurrection of slaves in Virginia, and says that with a handful of armed men he seized the United States arsenal at Harper's Ferry in Virginia.
