Its central figure, John Grant, leaves metropolitan hospitals to become the cove’s only doctor, meeting residents whose needs test both his professional judgment and his place in the community. A contemporary review described the novel as a story of Newfoundland life and highlighted the doctor, the local clergyman and his wife, and visiting Americans among its principal figures. Period notices also identified Van Schaick as an established physician who spent his holidays among Indigenous people, trappers, and lumber workers, experiences that supplied material for his novels. Sweetapple Cove reflects that double career, combining medical observation with an affectionate portrait of an isolated coastal community shaped by fishing, faith, illness, and mutual dependence.
