Glenn Dixon is a Canadian writer, teacher, musician, and traveler whose nonfiction often links place with language and culture. Pilgrim in the Palace of Words, published by Dundurn in 2009, grew from his graduate work in linguistics and his desire to encounter languages in the communities that use them. The book follows Dixon across several regions while he considers writing systems, sacred texts, endangered languages, and the ways speech shapes social life. Its stops include sites associated with the Rosetta Stone, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and Indigenous languages in western and northern Canada. Dixon combines travel narrative with sociolinguistic explanation rather than treating languages as isolated lists of grammar. Pilgrim in the Palace of Words includes photographs and addresses roughly six thousand languages spoken around the world. This early volume introduced a pattern visible in his later nonfiction: personal movement becomes a structure for examining how people communicate, remember, and understand the places they inhabit.
