Gordon Edgar is a cheesemonger, food writer, and worker-cooperative advocate whose books connect taste with labor, agriculture, and retail culture. Cheesemonger appeared from Chelsea Green in 2010 under the full title Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge. Part memoir and part account of the cheese trade, it follows Edgar’s route from punk-rock activism to the cheese counter at San Francisco’s Rainbow Grocery Cooperative. He began working there in 1994 and became its cheese buyer, giving readers a practical view of selecting, storing, explaining, and selling cheese. Rather than presenting food as luxury alone, Edgar writes about dairy production, farm economics, customer habits, and the compromises inside cooperative retail. Publishers Weekly called it a report from the front lines of the profession, while Edgar has explained that readers’ curiosity about the job helped shape its form. His later book Cheddar extends that approach into the history and politics of a single cheese. Both works keep producers, workers, and ordinary eaters within the same story.
