Gustav Freytag was a German novelist, dramatist, journalist, and cultural historian whose fiction repeatedly connected individual lives with large historical change. Ingo: Romaani is a Finnish-language edition of the opening story from Die Ahnen, his multi-volume cycle tracing a German family across centuries. Pictures of German Life in the XVIIIth and XIXth Centuries, Vol. II. belongs to his historical portrait of German customs and society, translated into English by Mrs. Malcolm. The German Biography records Freytag's work as both literary author and historian, while digitized editions show his interest in everyday institutions, political upheaval, and changing social habits.
