Hall Caine built an international readership through novels, drama, biography, and public lectures rooted in the moral and social life of the Isle of Man. The Manxman places a difficult triangle of loyalty, ambition, and love within Manx custom, while The Little Manx Nation gathers lectures on the island's rulers, church, and people. The White Prophet Volume II belongs to his later Egyptian novel, a work concerned with religious leadership and political authority during British rule. Caine had earlier served as secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and published recollections of the poet, an association that helped shape his literary career. His fiction repeatedly returned to conscience, law, family duty, and the pressures exerted by close communities.
