About this book

A darkening harbor at Peel sets the scene for Hall Caine's novel of love, family obligation and danger on the Isle of Man. The opening takes place in 1850 at Balladhoo, the home of Evan Mylrea, a local official whose sternness competes with his affection for his son Christian. Christian has returned after years away with debts that have strained the family fortune. Meanwhile, an extinguished pier light raises suspicions of smuggling along the coast.

Mona's resolve gives the later excerpt its urgency. She organizes a lantern signal from a cliff above the sea and helps position the men watching a suspect's house, while anxiously waiting for Danny to act. Caine brings together fishing life, local customs, forceful dialogue and the pressure of divided loyalties. Readers interested in Manx settings and emotionally charged coastal fiction will find a community where private attachments and public responsibilities become closely entangled.
